Better Than the Movies
by Lynn Painter
About
I've seen Better Than the Movies everywhere for years, and I finally decided to see if it lived up to the hype. As someone who loves romantic comedies, movie references, and slow-burn romance, this felt like the perfect book to start with.
Synopsis
Liz Buxbaum has always dreamed of living her own romantic comedy. When her childhood crush, Michael, moves back to town, she sees the perfect chance to win him over. The only problem? She has to team up with her sarcastic next-door neighbor, Wes Bennett. As they spend more time together, Liz starts questioning what her perfect love story really looks like.
First Impressions
From the very first chapter, I was hooked. The writing is light, funny, and full of rom-com references that make the story incredibly charming. Liz and Wes are both lovable in their own ways, and their chemistry feels natural from beginning to end. The romance develops at the perfect pace, making every interaction enjoyable. I'll definitely be picking up another Lynn Painter book.
Favorite Moments
My favorite scene has to be the party where Liz gets vomited on. As embarrassing as it is, it's also one of the funniest moments in the book. What makes it even better is when Wes lends her his clothes, then has to hold up the oversized sweatpants by the waistband so they don't fall down while they walk together. It's such a small gesture, but it perfectly shows how caring he really is.
Favorite Quote
One of my favorite lines is when Wes tells Liz that "she's not you." It's simple, but it says everything. To me, it's the moment that best shows how much he values her for who she is, and it perfectly captures one of the book's biggest messages.
Final Thoughts
Better Than the Movies completely lived up to the hype. It's funny, heartwarming, and full of unforgettable characters. Liz and Wes quickly became one of my favorite fictional couples, and I couldn't put the book down. If you're looking for a feel-good romance that reads like your favorite rom-com, I highly recommend it.
